Walking Marriage

Also, in southwestern China, walking marriages, in which the husband and wife do not live together, have been a traditional part of the Mosuo culture.[22] Walking marriages have also been increasingly common in modern Beijing. Guo Jianmei, director of the center for women's studies at Beijing University, told a Newsday correspondent, "Walking marriages reflect sweeping changes in Chinese society."[23] A similar arrangement in Saudi Arabia, called misyar marriage, also involves the husband and wife living separately but meeting regularly.[24]

Haroun-al-Roosevelt?

An interesting piece of writing. California was also said named after the famous caliph Harun al Rashid. See the related extracts below.

ayahlong
-----------------------------------------------------------
Future U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, when he was a New York Police Department Commissioner, was called in the local newspapers “Haroun-al-Roosevelt” for his habit of lonely all-night rambles on the streets of Manhattan, surreptitiously catching police officers off their posts. (Harun al-Rashid is said in the 1001 Nights to have wandered Baghdad at night dressed as merchant in order to observe the lives of his subjects).

Many towns in Al-Andulusia Spain were named after the great Caliph. Muslims ruled Spain for about 700 years (711-1492). Al-Hambra and California are but some of the Muslim named which got transferred from Spain to Mexico to the United States.

Success of a Farmer

There was a farmer who grew superior quality, award-winning corn in his farm. Each year, he entered his corn in the state fair where it won honours and prizes. One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew his corn. The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbours."How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbours when they are entering corn in the competition with yours each year?" The reporter asked. "Why brother?" The farmer replied, "Didn't you know? The wind picks up pollen grains from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbours grow inferior, sub-standard and poor quality corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I have to grow good corn, I must help my neighbours to grow good corns too." The farmer gave a superb insight into the connectedness of life. His corn cannot improve unless his neighbours' corn also improves. So it is in the other dimensions and areas of life! Those who choose to be in harmony must help their neighbours and colleagues to be at peace. Those who choose to live well must help others live well too. The value of a life is measured by the lives it touches...

Success does not happen in isolation; it is most often a participatory and collective process. So share the good practices, ideas and new knowledgewith your family, friends, team members and neighbours and all. As they say:"Success breeds Success."

************ ********* ****Abdullah ibn Umar (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated that the Prophet (peace beupon him) said:"The best friend in the Sight of Allah is he who is the well-wisher of hiscompanions , and the best neighbour is one who behaves best towards his neighbours" (Tirmidhi) Author Unknown - Taken from Inspirations Volume 5Inspirations Volume 5 will be available in 3 to 4 weeks time.

Interfaith dialogue

One of the greatest examples of inter-religious encounters was that between St Francis of Assisi and the Sultan of Egypt Sultan Malik al-Kamil.
“St Francis was struck by the morality and sincerity of the sultan and the sultan was struck by the fact that St Francis was a man of God. They discussed for days, debated, did not try to convert each other and left with respect and admiration for each other.”
Dr Syed Farid said although the general impression here was that Islam/Muslims were indifferent to dialogue, he said the Quran and the life of Prophet Muhammad showed otherwise.
Citing verse 64 of Surah Al-Imran and verse 125 of Surah An-Nahl, he said the Quran asked Muslims to engage in interfaith dialogue and in inter-civilisational dialogue with reason and evidence.
He added the prophet entered into agreements with Jews and Christians in Medina and they were referred to as ummah.
“The term ummah in Malaysia today, however, is exclusive to Muslims. Imagine if we used it as in the prophet’s time to include all Malaysians and not just a part of.”

Learning Experience

Meaning of ‘learning experience’
• Refers to the interaction between the learner and the external conditions in the environment to which he can react.
• Learning takes place through the active behaviour of the student; it is what he does that he learns, not what the teacher does.
• It is possible for two students to be in the same class and for them to be having two different experiences. (p.63)

Bafia To Become Mafia?

Thursday July 3, 2008
Bank Negara’s move criticised
PETALING JAYA: Consumer groups have criticised Bank Negara’s move to abolish the 20-day interest-free period for new retail transactions for credit card holders who settle a partial or minimum payment of their outstanding amount.
They said the move only enriched the banks with easy profits rather than help those who were already facing problems with credit card debts.
“Banks should be more sympathetic towards consumers. Some banks are getting richer at the expense of people’s misery. Don’t let Bafia (Banking and Financial Institutions Act) become mafia,” Malaysia Consumer Association of Malaysia president Datuk Dr Makmur Osman said when responding to the Bank Negara ruling, which took effect on Tuesday.

Darwin Memplagiat?

Salam,

New World Order

New World Order (Novus Ordo Mundi) refers to a set of conspiracy theories concerning a powerful and secretive group alleged to be plotting to eventually rule the world via an autonomous world government, which would replace sovereign states and other checks and balances in world power struggles. In this theory, many significant occurrences are said to be caused by a powerful secret group or groups. Historical and current events are seen as steps in an on-going plot to rule the world primarily through a combination of political finance, social engineering, mind control, and fear-based propaganda
